How to set up your SMS sender

Choose between Brave Managed SMS and Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) with 46elks for sending SMS in Brave Tools.

Overview

Before you can send SMS campaigns, you need to configure an SMS source. Brave Tools supports two options:

  • Brave Managed SMS — We handle everything. Quick to set up, no external account needed.
  • Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) — Connect your own 46elks account for full control over sender names, billing, and delivery.

Option 1: Brave Managed SMS

This is the easiest way to get started:

  1. Go to SMS Campaigns in the sidebar
  2. Click the Settings tab
  3. Under SMS Source, select Brave Managed SMS
  4. That is it — you are ready to send

With Brave Managed SMS:

  • Messages are sent from a shared sender name
  • You pay using SMS credits (included with your plan or purchased separately)
  • No technical setup required

Option 2: Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) with 46elks

If you want full control over your SMS sending, connect your own 46elks account:

  1. Create an account at 46elks.com if you do not have one
  2. Find your API Username and API Password in the 46elks dashboard
  3. In Brave Tools, go to SMS Campaigns > Settings
  4. Select BYOK (46elks)
  5. Enter your API credentials
  6. Click Save

With BYOK:

  • Use your own sender names and phone numbers
  • Messages are billed directly to your 46elks account
  • You still use Brave Tools credits for the platform fee
  • Full control over delivery and sender reputation

Managing sender names

Once your SMS source is configured, you can manage sender names in the Settings tab:

  • Add custom sender names (alphanumeric, max 11 characters)
  • Add sender phone numbers
  • Set a default sender for new campaigns

Note: Alphanumeric sender names (like "BraveSMS") cannot receive replies. Use a phone number if you need two-way communication.

Switching between sources

You can switch between Brave Managed and BYOK at any time in Settings. Existing campaigns are not affected — the change only applies to new campaigns.

Which option should I choose?

  • Choose Brave Managed if you want to get started quickly without technical setup
  • Choose BYOK if you need custom sender names, want billing through 46elks, or send high volumes
